Did you know “mola” in Spanish means “to be cool”? Fo’ real, yo. And Survive! Mola Mola! is doubly cool, at least. It’s a beautifully bizarre evolution clicker game from Japan that absolutely merits a spot on your device, at least for a couple weeks whilst you try to level up your giant sunfish by gobbling sea critters and avoiding SUDDEN DEATH. There are extra little features that make gameplay weirdly balanced in a way I haven’t seen in simpler evolution games; you can choose to go on “adventures” every so often that present a fairly high risk that you’ll simply perish and have to start over from the very beginning. Or, be patient and level up over time, purchasing faster food, a greater variety of munchies, or access to more adventures. The English translations of the original Japanese are just off-kilter enough to be hilarious, and the whole experience is compelling in a way I certainly didn’t expect. Recommended!
